Volunteers Needed
who might have a heart for the homeless.

Churches for Streets of hope is in Urgent need of volunteer assistance to help our staff provide high quality compassionate support to the 16 men we serve in our Winter Shelter. Please consider whether you can help our staff and help our men. Training will be provided.

To volunteer for any of these jobs,
call Barbara Nock, 301-807-8604

1. DO SHELTER LAUNDRY – Pick up bed linens and towels at shelter, take them to Laundromat or home to wash and return to shelter.

2. HELP TRANSPORT MEN TO VARIOUS PLACES – Showers, Laundromat, doctor’s appointments, etc.

3. COORDINATE TRANSPORTATION – When transportation is needed, contact the appropriate people to drive. This might include arranging for furniture pick up and delivery when men get into a place.

4. HELP FIND AND SORT CLOTHING – When donations of clothing come in, be responsible for knowing what there is and what the men need. Distribute to the men. Take the rest to a clothing closet. Try to find especially needed clothing.

5. HELP FIND SHOES – Be the “go to” person for shoes the men need. When donations come in, know what is needed and take the rest to a clothing closet. Try to find especially needed shoes through our churches.

6. PICK UP FOOD DONATIONS – One day a week, pick up the food donations from Starbucks and Chipotle at White Marsh and take it to the designated place.

7. WRITE THANK-YOU NOTES – When donations come in, you would be notified. Write a letter of thanks to the donor and keep a record of it.

8. PUT POSTINGS ON FACEBOOK – Once a week (or more) write something that pertains to what is happening at the shelter or among the churches, in order to generate interest in our ministry. Include a picture if possible.

For these last two, you would receive special training:
– Landlords like to know that there is someone in the community watching out for men they rent to. This might include helping a man plan ahead and stick to his plan so he has enough money for the rent and utilities. It would not mean giving him money.

10. KEEPING THE SHELTER OPEN DURING BAD WEATHER – Trained volunteers can take the place of paid staff for a few hours and save the organization a good deal of money.
